NEW YAM FESTIVAL
$500.00
New Yam Festival by African Gift Shop)
Description
Just like wheat was once believed to be a reincarnation of the goddess of agriculture in Roman mythology, yams were once believed to be a reincarnation of a nobleman who sacrificed himself for his community. In ancient times, the size of a man’s barn was an indicator of his wealth and status in the community. The Igbo, a prominent ethnicity in Nigeria, celebrate the New Yam festival yearly ceremony. This festival is very significant to the Igbo people because it pays homage to the god of the land and is a celebration of the bountiful harvest for that year. The New Festival is celebrated with pomp and pageantry, and this oil painting reminds us to be grateful for life’s small and big blessings.
