Description

A series of inter-tribal wars, which began as a scuffle in the marketplace, led to the defeat of the Owu troops by the Ijebu-Oyo coalition. This led to the defeat of other Egba towns and made them flee to seek refuge in a rock fortress known as Olumo Rock. Olumo rock is a combination of two Yoruba words: Olu, which means diety, and Mo, which means molded. This sanctuary is revered by the Yoruba race till date and is pivotal to the founding of Abeokuta, a prominent town in western Nigeria. This oil painting tells the story of survival and how the human spirit is made to thrive even in the most grueling circumstances.
