The Tortoise and the Hare
One day, all the animals in the animal kingdom were assembled in the forest square, and they sought to have fun and socialize while making friends. Then the Hare, in a bout of restless arrogance, boasted that he was one of the fastest animals in the kingdom and he was most definitely faster than the Tortoise. He laughed the Tortoise to derision and challenged him to a race, believing the Tortoise would cower and refuse his challenge.
However, to the amazement of all the animals present, the Tortoise accepted the challenge. All the animals believed this was an easy win for the Hare and felt that the Tortoise should just have refused the challenge because he could never win. But the Tortoise didn’t back down and insisted that he would race with the Hare. So the die was cast; the time agreed was in two days, when the sun sat in the middle of the sky, smiling down in her sweltering heat.
The time came, and all the animals gathered to watch what they considered would be a resounding defeat of the Tortoise. However, what they didn’t know was that the crafty and cunning Tortoise had made plans with all his family members and situated them at strategic spots along the forest-surrounded race track, so the Hare was not just racing with one Tortoise but his whole family- his cousins, grown nephews and siblings.
The race began, and the arrogant Hare ran a few meters and decided to sleep for a while. During this time, the Tortoise raced ahead, and then his cousin, who was situated about 2 km ahead of him, took over the race. The Hare woke up and saw the Tortoise ahead of him. He wondered how he had gotten this far, so he ran, overtook the Tortoise, and went back to sleep. This happened three times, and on the third time, the Hare overslept and woke up to the jubilation of other animals. The Tortoise had won the race.
Business Lessons to Be Learnt
The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skillful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. It is all decided by chance, by being in the right place at the right time.
